Spring 2022 - T&A, Miami, and more

1/22/2022

Hello everyone!

We hope you had a great Easter weekend and are ready for summer.  With the recent snowfalls for our friends and family in Canada, it may not feel like summer is ready for you.

We just hit our 6 year mark in the Middle East and are still loving every bit of it!  Hard to believe it has been 6 already.

Most COVID restrictions have now lifted, which is great news for people like us who want to travel more and not have the hassles and restrictions!  Dangerous on the pocket book however!

Some news we are so excited about...we are getting our first visitor to Saudi!!!  Our friend Anita will fly back with us from Canada in July, get to experience our Saudi life for a couple weeks, and then will join us in Africa.  You can not even imagine how pumped we are to host our first guest here!!!

This blog shares some of our spring 2022 highlights - Dubai a couple of times, an awesome T&A trip to Cabo San Lucas, Miami, and lots of fun in Saudi & Bahrain.

Enjoy the pics and videos...

New Years 2022 - Bahrain

We had a great time bringing in New Years in Bahrain.  We did a brunch at McGettigans with friends Devin & Michelle.  Food and drinks were flowing....a great way to kick off 2022 in style!

Saudi & Bahrain in Spring

Spring in the Middle East is beautiful weather so it's nice to get out and enjoy times with friends.  Here are pics from some brunches, and amazing hat, an outdoor nursery in Saudi, and cuddles with the cat!

Dubai - Jan 2022

We went to Dubai for a long weekend in January and had an amazing weekend.

The weekend started off with a rooftop patio, dinner and drinks with friends Nigel & Jayne.  Once again, it is amazing how you meet the best people.  Met them at a Maldives resort in October 2020 and have been able to connect a few times since.  Great people with amazing stories after living in the Middle East for 20+ years!

We spent a day at the Expo 2020 - amazing job with this Dubai!  WOW!  Incredible pavilions from every country - the architecture is stunning.  The place is massive (check the video below) so could not even come close to seeing everything.  Had to come back for another day - see the March section in this blog.

We went out for a brunch at STK...quite possibly the best brunch we have ever been to - great food and drinks and an awesome vibe!  After that, we met up with friends Frank & Sherri (Americans in Dubai) and ran into Gabriel & Dorina (met them on the Croatia cruise in 2021...they are a fun couple from Montenegro).

T&A in Cabo San Lucas - Feb 2022

T&A 2022 went back to where it all started...Cabo San Lucas on the west side of Mexico at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula (south of California).  Our hotel was the Riu Palace Baja California.

2022's cast of characters included us, Mark & Gayle, Meghan & Joe, Marilyn, and a newcomer - Marilyn's sister Stephanie.
There was also a special guest appearance by Kevin, better known as "KP", who we both worked with in Winnipeg.  Great to see him again after many years!  For anyone who was at our wedding 15 years ago in the Dominican, you will most likely remember KP as the person giving my aunts "sexy rides" in the pool.

There were the usual shenanigans - pool drinks, dance parties, Super Bowl parties, threats from security after "borrowing" a bike, and crashing a wedding.  Well, actually crashing the first dance.  Whoops.

We did a fun excursion - whale watching, boat trip, pub crawl in Cabo, and then a few beach bars, before a rowdy water taxi ride back to our hotel (check the video below for some Grammy award winning performances).

Once again, the bartender foiled any sexy Valentine's Day plans by getting Lisa drunk.  She went to "sleep" early so Jeff flew solo for Valentine's Day dinner....or did he?
Luckily, he found a date (a huge piece of bark from a palm tree) that Joe brilliantly named "Leafsa".  So Leafsa joined Jeff for dinner, did a photo shoot with her new man, and had shots with Steph (video is below).  Lisa was quite surprised to wake up with Leafsa cuddled up next to Jeff.  If I recall, the words were "What the fuck??"  And then Leafsa was gone.

Always a great time seeing the T&A gang.  Hoping we can get more out for the next T&A adventure in spring '23.  Stay tuned for details...

Off to Miami.

Miami - Feb 2022

We stopped in Miami for a few days on our way back to the Middle East.  Always a great time in this city, as we love the beaches, the food and drinks, the shopping, and the overall vibe.

We thought we would do a few things we had never done in Miami before:
- Hop On, Hop Off Bus - saw some new areas of Miami, including a new area that looked really cool (Wynwood...more on that later), went to a favorite of ours - Bayside Marketplace for mojitos, and then ended in Little Havana for drinks, shopping, and some Cuban food (Lisa LOVES Cubano sandwiches).  It was so cool to enjoy drinks there while listening to Cuban music and seeing the cigar making shops.
- Wynwood Marketplace - after driving past it on the bus, we went back to this very cool area of Miami.  It is the arts district and has amazing signs and painted buildings plus the incredible Wynwood Marketplace, a 60,000 square foot outdoor complex with art, shops, food trucks, and bars.  Great music all over.  (see the video below).
- Hollywood - we cabbed to Hollywood, just north of Miami to check it out.  Found a cool little restaurant (Le Tub Saloon) that had a cool vibe, amazing burgers, and was along the water.

The rest of the time we spent in South Beach, enjoying the bars (the Clevelander still rocks!  See videos below), restaurants (Havana 1957, Sandwicherie...yum!), shopping, and the great beaches!

Can't wait to get back to Miami!

Dubai - March 2022

We went to Dubai for a March long weekend with a bunch of our friends (appropriately named "The Shitshow") from Saudi for another fun weekend.

We met up with Ian & Nikki (our Portsmouth friends that we met in Bangkok), who were on their way to Maldives.  Kept them out drinking until 3am and they had to leave for the airport at 5am.  Ouch!  (or did they keep us up drinking??)

We spent another day at Expo and saw a few more pavilions.  It was so hot and busy so spent most of our time having cold beers.  A really cool thing - our friend Nicky got a pic from the Ukrainian pavilion showing memos from visitors showing support in their fight vs the Russians (see pic below).

Had some live music, pool time, and a great brunch with the Shitshow gang....also great to see Frank & Sherri again!  Videos are below.

July 2021 - Croatia, Dubai

7/30/2021

This blog will highlight one of the most amazing trips we have had.
You can click on pictures to enlarge them.

We spent 3 weeks in Croatia, known as Hrvatska to the locals.  It is in Central/Southeast Europe along the Adriatic Sea and is just east of Italy, south of Slovenia, west of Bosnia, and north of Greece.
The country has a population of just over 4 million and was part of Yugoslavia until 1991, so you will see many amazing old forts and churches in this blog.

Overall feel of the country - you couldn't find a bad picture, bad food, bad wine, or bad people.  They rely on tourism and you can see why.  The country is extremely scenic with turquoise water, beautiful trees and mountains, and the historic cities.  We will discuss some of the incredible food as well!

Masks were optional the entire stay, unless you went into a shop.  A refreshing 'escape' from Covid!

Here we go...

We flew through Frankfurt into Zagreb, Croatia, then spent 5 days in Northern Croatia before driving south to Split for a 7 day cruise and then a few more days in Split.

There are many amazing pics and videos to share the story...enjoy!

Northern Croatia - Istria

We spent 5 days in Istria, the northern part of Croatia located just south of Slovenia and a couple hours from Venice.  We had a great resort just north of Rovinj.

We visited Pula on the south side to see the Pula Arena, a Roman amphitheatre built out of limestone between 27BC and 68AD.  In fact, they still use it and were taking down the stage from an opera show the night before.  Quite a sight to see!

Rovinj is a small coastal town with about 15,000 people.  There is an awesome old town area filled with shops, restaurants, and many boat excursions (many dolphin tours!).  Incredible people watching.  We enjoyed the hike up the hill to St. Euphemia's Basilica which can be viewed from high above.  Was interesting to see the remnants from the previous night, with vodka and orange juice at the entrance to the church!

We will be back to this area!

Drive from Istria to Split, pit stop in Zadar

We took the 5.5 hour drive south through the mountains from Northern Croatia to Split.  Beautiful drive through forested mountains going through tunnel after tunnel.  They have many tunnels, some up to 6km long, going through the mountains...not around them.  Can't imagine the work involved in that project!

We stopped in Zadar, a coastal city with a fort, marina, and nice peninsula.  We saw the famous Sea Organ, which is a series of tubes under the marble boardwalk that takes the sea current and wind to make organ-like sounds.  The video is below and a bit windy, but you get the point.

After lunch and a beer, on to Split to meet up with Hayden & Christy, friends from Saudi, to see Split and get ready for our cruise tomorrow!  Split is in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, which has a much different landscape that the mountainous and forested north.

Split is Croatia's 2nd largest city (next to Zagreb) with a population of 180,000.  We visited the Old Town area and Diocletian's Palace, then settled into the live music at the park before heading to bed to rest up for boarding the cruise.
What kind of things are being thrown in the toilets in Split?

Croatia Cruise

Day 1: Split Arrival,  Saturday
We packed our bags and went to the port to drop them off to be loaded onto the Bella yacht.
Then off for drinks to get prepared before boarding at 1PM.  Got settled onto the boat for unpacking, then drinks and a Welcome Dinner with everyone.

We had 40 people on board plus the crew:
  • Cruise Manager - Inga
  • Captain - Nino
  • Servers/Bartender - Antonio and Filipa
  • Housekeeping - Katarina
  • Boat crew - Tino and Djur
  • Plus 2 chefs, who we never really met

The boat was amazing - lots of space, great bar & dining area, a plunge pool, and a hot tub.

We have been on 3 large cruises before - they often port at 7am and leave between 4-6pm.  We were really excited that this trip would be different, as we would be getting stops in small towns, swim stops, stops at national parks, as well as being able to enjoy the evenings, as the boat would not set sail until 7am on most mornings.

The pics will tell the rest of the story...
Picture
Day 2:  From Split to Bol (Island Brač) to Stari Grad (Island Hvar), Sunday
We stop in Bol, a small town on Island Brač, with optional swim at the Golden Horn if weather permits, enjoy the 530 m long golden pebble beach said to be the best in Croatia. It is unique since it changes shape and position depending on the winds.
Return to the boat for lunch and then head to Stari Grad.  Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns in Europe with many friendly and cheap konobas and restaurants in the backstreets of the old town. The Stari Grad Plain and the old town centre of Stari Grad have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008. Your evening is free to explore Stari Grad on your own.

So that was the summary of the day (from our itinerary).

Bol was a small town with really cool seats on the promenade to sit and enjoy wine or other drinks.  Very nice!

We made our first swim stop in the Adriatic Sea - a bit cold but very refreshing from the heat.  It was great to jump from the boat, float, and they even had a seadoo that could be lowered from the top of the boat (see the video later!)

Stari Grad had a really cool Old Town area with nice restaurants with gardens.   We chose to visit Dionis Restaurant after hearing raving reviews.  Very cool place!
They picked us up and brought us back in vans.  The restaurant is actually a farm in central Hvar Island.  They use a wood oven and put tons of beef, potatoes, and other vegetables into a metal pan, cover it, and then put the burning wood on top.  They cover it for 2 hours while you enjoy their local wines.  The homemade bread (see the pics and video) and food was amazing.
All you could eat and drink for $25.  Wow!

After that...lights out!
Day 3: Stari Grad to Hvar Town (both on Island Hvar) then to Korčula, Monday Morning departure towards to the town of Hvar on the island of Hvar, the most popular island in the Adriatic and a meeting point for the international jet set. A sightseeing tour of this charming town, with 8 centuries of architecture, will show you the picturesque little streets and the first public theatre in Europe (older than Shakespeare’s theatre in the UK). Afterwards we set sail for Korčula, with swimming stop in one of the pristine bays and lunch onboard. Early afternoon arrival to Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo. Take a walking tour through this fortified town which is one of the best- preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean and enjoy wine tasting in one of the local wine bars. Your evening is free to discover the town and enjoy dinner on your own at one of the many good restaurants.

In Hvar, after a tour, we climbed the hill to the Tvrdava Fortress - amazing views of the town.  Beautiful place!

We also toured Korčula after wine tasting.  Korčula was one of our favourites,  enjoying the old town, built in a circle, with amazing restaurants on the outside along the water.  On the way back to the boat, we came across Cocktail Bar Massimo which is on top of an old tower - very steep stairs and a small hole to climb through to get to the top but so worth it for the incredible views (check the videos!)
Day 4: Korčula to Dubrovnik, Tuesday In the morning sail to Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Upon arrival in Dubrovnik, you will enjoy a guided tour of the magnificent Old Town with a panoramic bus ride above the Old Town. After the panoramic view, we will arrive at the historical centre of Dubrovnik, walk through STRADUN – both a street and a square, the most famous place inside the town walls, the famous city enlisted as UNESCO’s World Heritage site, where your guide will show you the most interesting sights of Dubrovnik. After city tour, you will be left on your own to explore the city, visit City Walls, the Franciscan Monastery with Europe's second oldest pharmacy, the Rector's Palace and the Cathedral, take a boat ride to Lokrum island or take the cable car to the top of the Mount Srđ. Overnight in Dubrovnik.

Had a beautiful swim stop on our long trip to Dubrovnik.  Lisa enjoyed the stand up paddle boarding.

Dubrovnik was an amazing city we wished we could have spent more time in - a medieval fortress from the 7th century that is incredible to see ... pictures do not do justice!

Had a great tour and then wandered to see some bars on our hit list - Buza Bar on the cliff, Katie O'Connors Irish Pub, and the Cave Bar at Hotel More.  Also had a great pizza at Pizzeria Oliva!

Hope to get back to see more of this city!

Day 5: Dubrovnik to Mljet to Lastovo, Wednesday
Today we turn our compass back north towards Mljet Island, with plenty of time for morning swim along the sail. Upon arrival join the Cruise Manager for a visit to the famous salt lakes in the National Park and enjoy the boat ride to St. Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey and a Church dating back to the 12th Century. Mljet National Park encompasses five types of forest, many species of birds, and two deep lakes, Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) and Malo Jezero (Small Lake). At lunchtime we continue towards Lastovo, an island known for its Venetian architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries. Along with Mljet, Lastovo is the most forested Croatian island with more than 70% of the forested area, and in 2007 Lastovo was declared a Nature Park.

The pics will tell the story of the beautiful National Park on Mljet Island as well as the great stop we made at Lastovo in the small bay.  Awesome day!

Day 6: Mljet to Vela Luka (Island of Korčula) to Vis, Thursday Morning we sail north towards the island of Vis, stopping in Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, the birthplace of Olivera Dragojevic, a famous Croatian singer. Vela Luka is a quiet Mediterranean town, facing traditional agriculture, fishing, and tourism. At lunchtime we continue towards Vis once a strategic naval Yugoslav base and closed to the public. Due to this isolation, Vis has a special charm – “the Mediterranean as it once was” making it really interesting to visit. Upon arrival in town of Vis join the walking tour to visit the remains of the Roman thermal place and views of the beautiful Villae Rusticae situated along the waterfront. Overnight in Vis.  Tonight enjoy Captain’s dinner onboard.

We enjoyed our stop in Vela Luka, a quiet place with a very nice marina area.  The swim stop was nice, especially with the big naval ship.  Then over to Vis Island.
We cabbed across from Vis town to Komiza, on the west side of the island.  Beautiful old town along the water.  Then back to Vis, where we came across the very strange practice of the Hash House Harriers (see the video!).  Enjoyed a few drink stops, and then back on board for the Captain's Dinner.

Day 7: Vis to Biševo to Split, Friday We will have an early morning cruise towards small island of Biševo to visit the Blue cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon. As sometimes weather conditions can be very unpredictable, the possibility of our visit will depend on those conditions, however you will be notified of this on time. Enjoy a relaxing cruise as we sail towards the island of Hvar, with swim stop in one of the secluded bays. We will continue towards Split this UNESCO World Heritage city bases the city centre in and around the stunning Diocletian’s Palace, the Roman emperor Diocletian’s retirement palace from 295–305 AD. Stroll through the palace basement filled with market stalls and outside experience the historical architecture of this beautiful palace. See the remnants of Split`s Roman heritage, it`s Renaissance and Gothic structures, Jupiter`s temple, the Peristyle and many other unique sites. Overnight in Split.

We woke up and got ready for the trip to Blue Cave, which is amazing to see.  Last day on the boat was a bit sad, as it was an amazing trip with great people.

Enjoyed our last swim stop and a tour in Split, including trying the food at the famous Kantun Paulina - the Croatian
ćevapčići, which is a sandwich containing beef/pork sausages, onion, tomato sauce, and cream cheese.  So good we returned 3 times over the next few days!

Back to the park for some cocktails and live music, then back onto the boat for our last sleep there.

Day 8: Split Departure, Saturday
After breakfast, it’s time to disembark. Said sad goodbyes to the crew, and friends we met from the US, Switzerland, Denmark, Hungary, Albania, Slovenia, and Croatia.

AN AMAZING TRIP!

And it isn't over yet.

Took a cab to our hotel, chilled at the beach (with 1L mojitos), then off to an Irish Pub to watch the Lions/Springboks rugby match with Hayden & Christy.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

We took a day tour to Plitvice Lakes national park, which is one of the oldest parks in Croatia and became a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1979.
It is at the top of the list of "things to see/do" in Croatia.  And we can see why!

An amazing hike around the 16 lakes that cascade via 90+ waterfalls.

The pics and videos will do the talking...

Pirate Boat trip to Blue Lagoon

We took a pirate boat on our last day with Hayden & Christy, sailing to Necujam, Maslinica, Ciovo, and the Blue Lagoon.

The trip included many drinks and many swim stops.  The sea legs were a bit wobbly afterwards - not sure if it was from the water or the pirate cocktails!

Afterwards, we enjoyed a cheese-infused steak and a tasty pizza at Bakra. Great place!

Spent our last day in Split doing some shopping, some beach time, and an early night sleep for our 3am wake up call to head to the airport!

The Rest of 2020

Wow, it has actually been April since our last post.  Don't worry - we're still alive.
Like the rest of the world, we just haven't had a lot of travel this year!

This blog will discuss life in Saudi during the pandemic, the little travel we did have, and a new addition to our family...

Enjoy!

Pandemic Life in Saudi Arabia

It was quite amazing to watch how countries around the world were handling the COVID-19 pandemic.  We saw many outbreaks in the US, Canada, Europe, and many are going through the 2nd waves right now and experiencing lockdowns.

Saudi was quite strict, as discussed in the last blog we posted.  The country locked down in March and didn't open back up (for expats) until September 15th.  Yes, that was over 6 months INSIDE the Kingdom with no pork or alcohol but we managed.  Masks have been mandatory in all public areas since March and nobody is protesting or fighting against that.

Many friends and their families were also stuck out of Kingdom.  Aramco was amazing at continuing to pay them and arrange travel to get them back into Kingdom.

We had many vacations in Kingdom at home, staying on our compound to enjoy the pool and have many BBQ's with friends.  There was a few weeks with 24 hour quarantine where you could only go out for essentials like medical or groceries and you also needed a government pass to go through check stops to get to work.  Overall, the Saudi government and health officials did an outstanding job managing the pandemic which is why our cases continue to stay low.

The pics below will show some of the things we did to keep entertained throughout this period:
- Lots of BBQ's - teaching friends how to make tandoori
- Celebrating Birthdays
- Friends shipped items to us from Canada and the US - sure cheered us up while locked inside
- Many game nights and karaoke nights that turned into great costume parties (for us anyway!)
- As things opened up, there were some concerts
- We tried many new restaurants as a way of getting out into the city
- We did some Saudi marathons.  Nothing hardcore - just tracking distance over time with targets of 100km in a month
- We did our first COVID tests, allowing us to take a trip to Bahrain in early October
- we did a couple trips to a sister compound (Murjan Village) in Jubail, going with many friends for some pool and beach fun
- Then of course, there was a great Halloween party

Looking at all of these pics sure makes us feel very lucky.
Sure we didn't travel like we wanted.
Sure we didn't get home to see family & friends like we wanted.
But we are healthy.  Our friends & family are healthy.
And we made the best of the lockdown time.

Maverick the Cat

During the lockdown, we were walking in our compound and found an abandoned kitten.  He was so cute but so scared.  We fed him one night and we decided to make him ours.

We struggled with names...do we call him Corona or Covie to remind us of the crazy times when we got him.

Instead, we landed on Maverick...probably because Lisa is so excited for the new Top Gun movie that is coming out.

We are now getting adjusted to life with a kitten...a kitten that has tons of energy & doesn't always listen.
A kitten that rips apart Lisa's 2000 piece puzzle...when she has 1950 of them in place already.
A kitten that decides the thawing hamburger should be his and not ours.
A kitten that fetches toys like a dog and likes chasing (and eating) geckos - so funny to watch (see the videos!)
But...a kitten that is ours and fits into our family!

Here are a few pics of the little fella...

Jeddah - August 2020

At the end of August we had a couple weeks off and could not travel out of Kingdom so we decided here was our chance to see the Red Sea and the west coast of Saudi.

Off to Jeddah for the 1 hour flight.  Our first flight since COVID.  Loved the extra space!

You can see from the pics below that Jeddah had some very nice architecture, and amazing corniche, the world's tallest water fountain (over 1000 feet tall), and a very cool historic part of the city - Al Balad (Old Jeddah) that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Note to self...late August Saudi temperatures (45 degrees Celsius) and no cold beers is not a good combination!

KAEC - September 2020

After Jeddah, we went up the coast to KAEC (King Abdullah Economic City) which is a city designed to function on economies other than oil.  There is a large port there and it was also the first part of Saudi to allow ladies to drive.

Lots of great beach area and the Royal Greens golf course which has hosted PGA and just this last weekend an LPGA event.  In fact, Dustin Johnson holds the course record.

We had fun golfing with our friends Hayden & Christy...even had to drink some non-alcoholic beers to keep refreshed.
Course Record - Dustin Johnson

Maldives - October 2020

We finally got out of Kingdom for a vacation mid-October, venturing off to the Maldives for a 1-week all inclusive at Varu by Atmosphere.

This was a great resort and we took advantage of the beautiful weather, amazing beaches, snorkelling, and our water villa with pool on the patio. We even got to see shark and sting ray feeding nightly.

The vacation took a scary turn on our second night just after 8PM. We were getting ready to leave the bar (honestly, only had 2-3 drinks) and we were going to head back to our patio pool for a few more. Lisa looked at me and said "There's a problem...something's not right". By the time I went to get a sit down chair, she had fainted and smacked her hand and head on the floor. Everyone rushed to help and they got a doctor to help and get us back to the room. It seems that the fainting was due to dehydration (lots of sun and not enough water). Scary as hell! And a bruised hand that Lisa couldn't move the entire time we were there.

The resort did everything to take care of us and didn't even charge for the doctor. They even had a doctor come to the room our 2nd last day to do the COVID PCR test needed to get back into Dubai.

Overall, besides Lisa's tumble, it was an amazing week away. Since everyone arriving at the island needed a negative PCR test, nobody was wearing masks and it was almost like a 1-week window in 2020 where COVID didn't exist. So strange! The resort was at 40% capacity and had only about 100 guests so it was almost like having an island to yourself.

We feel so lucky to have been able to visit Maldives a second time. What a beautiful place!

Dubai - October 2020

After the Maldives, we spent a week in Dubai, which we were very excited for.  Usually we are there for a weekend only...fly in, party, fly home.  This time we could relax, see parts we hadn't seen, and chill in the area near our Airbnb.

We stayed in the JBR (Jumeriah Beach Residence) area which is our favourite part of Dubai.  Within a 10 minute walk you have a free beach, many hotel pools with bars and beach access, tons of other restaurants and bars, a movie theatre, and a marina with a great mall.

The first weekend, we visited the Dubai Mall for shopping but also so Lisa could see the Mediclinic.  After a consultation, they did 3 x-rays and determined she had 3 fractures in her hand so they splinted it and then called us back the next day for a cast.  This only cost $300US.  Can't imagine what that would've cost back in Canada or the US.  FYI, Lisa just had the cast removed November 15th (one month after "The Fall")...she will need a month of rehab, as she is still bruised and can't move her fingers.

Besides a bunch of shopping (at 3 malls!), some beach/pool time, and a visit to Souq Madinat Jumeirah, we found some places in Dubai we had never seen:
- The Pointe - with the World's Largest Fountain - celebrated Jeff's birthday at Chicago Meatpackers for Meat Monday....$75US got us a huge steak, 2 sides, and all we could drink wine from 6-9PM
- Bluewater Island - great new island near JBR with many restaurants - tried the Mexican themed Puerto 99
- Global Village - huge amusement park with pavilions from most countries in the world...park access $4US...unbelievable.

Lots of great 2 for 1 and Happy Hour deals in Dubai as they do everything to generate tourism right now!

Another great time in Dubai!

2021 Plans

We had to submit our 2021 vacations already and don't have much planned yet.  Orange highlighted days are the vacations.

We left Q1 empty as we still don't know what will happen with travel due to COVID (fingers crossed for an effective vaccine soon!). This means that our T&A fun will have to wait until 2022...but don't worry - we will be back with a vengeance!

July - we will be doing France and somewhere else in Europe for a couple weeks

August/September - Canada (for the first time since 2019 for Lisa and 2018 for Jeff)...maybe a week in the Montana cottage?

We will fill in the other vacations as time gets closer.  Too much uncertainty now.  Would love to get in a Tanzania/Zanzibar trip!

Hopefully some friends and family will join us for some travels!

We are so fortunate that all of our friends and family are staying healthy during these times.  We miss you all and hope to see you soon.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas season!

Dubai, South Africa & Thailand - Dec.19/Jan.20

Hello everybody,

We are finally getting back with another blog update from the end of 2019.  We will share some pics, videos, and stories from an awesome November and December.

Our friend Anita flew from Canada to Dubai to meet us (yay Anita!).  She joined us there for a gong show of a birthday brunch for Lisa and then we went to South Africa.  Later in December, we flew to Thailand for New Years.

All that and more in this update.

Enjoy.  And remember, you can scroll over the pics to see captions and click to enlarge them if you wish.

Dubai

We had quite a group of close friends join us for the weekend in Dubai for Lisa's birthday brunch at the end of November.  As mentioned, our friend Anita flew in from Canada.  We loved spending time with her in Dubai and giving her a bit of a taste of "our new home".

Brunch, as expected, was a complete gong show as you can see from the pics and video.

Jeff had to fly home Saturday to work Sunday so Lisa and Anita took advantage of the Dubai time to tour around, see the sights, and also do a desert trip where they surfed the sand dunes, rode camels, and had a BBQ and drinks in the desert.

Jeff flew back to Dubai Sunday after work and met the girls at the airport to fly off to Johannesburg, South Africa.

THANK YOU ANITA for coming to visit!!

Kruger Park

After landing in Johannesburg early Monday morning, we took a short flight to Kruger Park, landing at Skukuza airport.

We were picked up by our safari guide and on the way to our lodge we saw giraffes and 6 lions right along the side of the road....even before we got to our camp.

We checked into Notten's Bush Camp and had breakfast.  What an amazing lodge.  We would stay there again for sure.  The food was incredible and top shelf alcohol was included but it was the top-level service that made the experience.  Great place!
They also warn you about walking out late at night without a flashlight - we did see a hyena walking through the camp - see the pics below.

The game drives were fantastic, seeing all the big animals we were looking for and even seeing a leopard catch an impala and run it up the tree so the nearby hyena couldn't get any of it.  So cool...check the video!

We also took a break one day between morning and afternoon game drives to go golfing at Skukuza Golf Course.  We saw warthogs there (pumbas) and many hippos in the waterholes.

This was another amazing safari.  We were so happy to share the experience with Anita, as her wild trip continued.

Cape Town

We stayed at an Airbnb in Camp's Bay, a very cool area of Cape Town with a nice beach and many bars and restaurants.

Cape Town is right up there with one of the most beautiful cities we have ever seen.  It actually reminded us a lot of Vancouver.  There are so many things to do here - nice waterfront, great beaches, amazing restaurants & bars, safaris, shark diving, and so many touristy areas to visit.  It is tough to beat the scenery around Cape Town!

Also, some kick ass wine tasting tours!

Highlights:
- Hop On Hop Off Wine Tram in Franschhoek - an incredible day with beautiful scenery
- Constantia Valley wine area
- Table Mountain
- V&A Waterfront - a beautiful area along the harbour - great views, lots of shopping, restaurants, bars, and some great canal boat rides to enjoy!
- Bo Kaap is a former township on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre.  It has beautiful colourful homes and is quite multicultural (56% muslim).- Oranjezicht City Fram Market - a great market with lots of food and a nice beer garden
- Boulder's Beach - so cool to see penguins out in the wild and enjoying a gorgeous day
-
Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope - at the southernmost tip of Africa
- Chapman's Peak Drive - one of the most scenic ocean drives you can take

- A reminder of where we are - check out the pic below of the bench saying "Whites Only".  It wasn't too long ago when this was acceptable!
- Diamond Tour - pretty cool to see diamond cutting & polishing in action
- Food:
Codfather - pick your fish, they weight it and cook it for you

Hussar Grill - incredible steak house ... had to go twice since Lisa passed out the first time!
Biltong - is a dried, cured meat originating in South African countries using various types of meats

We really enjoyed our time in Cape Town and area, as you will see by the pics below...

We took a bus to the southernmost tip of Africa to enjoy some awesome views and a nice hike along the cliffs.
Boulder's Beach

This is a very cool beach in Simon's Town where you can see tons of penguins hanging out in the wild.  You could even swim in the water with them but apparently it is pretty cold!
Wine Tours

We took the Hop On Hop Off Wine Tram in Franschhoek - an incredible day with beautiful scenery as you will see.  What a cool way to do some wine tasting.  The day definitely got out of control!

We did another wine tour in the Constantia Valley wine area near Cape Town.  Another fantastic time!

Christmas Season in Bahrain & Saudi

Here are a few pics from the Christmas season in Bahrain, where we spent a few weekends with friends.  We also hosted a huge Christmas dinner at our home in Saudi.  Great times that make it feel festive!

New Years in Thailand

We took a few days off over New Years to go to Thailand, spending our time in Phuket.
We were here in 2018 and loved it - a great getaway for a few days.

We went for dinner with Rhonda, a Canadian who worked with Jeff in Saudi.  She now lives part-time in Phuket and part-time in Kelowna back in Canada.  It was great to catch up!

New Years was a wild time in Phuket but our highlight was the boat trip for a day outing to Freedom Beach...beautiful!

May - Lisa will head home to Ontario and I will meet her a week after.  We will spend some time in Calgary and Edmonton and then a few days in London, UK on the way back
July - Cyprus
August - have a vacation booked but no plans yet (most likely Europe somewhere)
September - Oktoberfest in Munich
November - have a vacation booked but no plans yet

February/March 2021 - T&A21 ....we will be there for this one.  So sad to be missing the T&A gang this year, as they are off to Costa Rica in a week or so.

Hope you enjoyed some of the stories and pics.

Will leave you with a couple really cool pics of the recent eclipse - these are some shots someone took out in the desert.  Awesome!

Stay safe everyone....see you soon!

Summer 2019 - Portugal and France

9/1/2019

Hello again,

It's been a great summer for us.

We spent most of the summer in Saudi and Bahrain, but Lisa did make a trip home to see her mom in Ontario, including a Michael Buble concert, also known as "Lisa's next husband".

We met up in Lisbon and spent a week in Portugal, then spent a week in Paris touring the city and also spending a couple days at Disneyland Paris, Lisa’s first time going to any Disney park.

After that, we needed a week of relaxation on the beaches of the French Riviera.  This relaxation included a break from the internet, social media, and the camera.  Only one pic from here...at the end of the blog page.

Enjoy the stories and pics of our summer...

Summer in Saudi

Once again, the summer heat and humidity set in, forcing us inside for air conditioning or out to the chilled pools.  We spent many afternoons in pools with friends and also at some brunches in Bahrain and the Rugby Club in Bahrain.  We even spent a night or two at Hayden's place, where he and DJ ChunkyLuv mixed some tracks for our upcoming Oman trip in November.

Every summer, at some point, the wives all head home so the compound and most of the Middle East is mainly filled with guys.  Still not sure why they leave us unsupervised!

Then around the second Eid holiday, the guys take off to meet their families and enjoy some vacation time.

Lisa spent a week back in Ontario, visiting her mom.  They had a chance to go see a Michael Buble concert, which Lisa says is the "best sounding concert she has been too".  Jeff still isn't a fan.  It was great to get home and see mom and other family!

Lisbon
We loved Lisbon.  What a beautiful place.  As with most European cities, it is filled with amazing history and architecture.

You can enjoy the city life, but also get out into the countryside and see some amazing places and fantastic beaches.  (see the blog a bit lower for places outside Lisbon).  The Hop On, Hop Off bus is the way to get around - it even takes you out of the city to the great beaches and sites nearby!

Some highlights from Lisbon:
- what is really impressive is how the city looks, considering that it was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the city.
- it is situated along the Tigris River and has a beautiful bridge, the April the 25th Bridge, which is modelled after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco.
- Cristo Rei is a monument in neighbouring Almada that faces Lisbon to bless it.  It is inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- there are many rooftop bars that provide great views of Lisbon and Lisbon Castle, officially known as Castelo de S.Jorge.
- street cars (Tram 28) are everywhere and are a symbol of Lisbon.
- the grilled chicken and seafood paella is amazing but you really have to try the Pastel de Natas, which are a tasty custard pastry.  See below, as the famous version is from Belem, just on the outskirts of Lisbon.
- Portuguese wine is amazing and cheap and you need to try Ginja - it is a cherry flavoured liqueur they pour into a chocolate cup.  Pop it in your mouth and the chocolate mixes with the cherry.  So good!

One of Jeff's co-workers says Portugal is "Europe's hidden gem".  You can see why!

Porto
We took a high-speed train for a day trip to Porto, about 3 hours north of Lisbon.  What a beautiful port city situated along the Douro River.

We didn't know what to do besides port tasting so took the Hop On, Hop Off bus to sightsee before hopping into the port houses.

What an incredible city full of history and old buildings that definitely had stories to tell.  It had a very 'old' and beautiful feel to it...maybe it was the cloud cover and light rain.  Beautiful city!

Now...on to the port tasting.  The view of the buildings along the Douro River is incredible.  At lunch, the waiter, born & raised in Porto, had recommendations for tasting port - saying to go with the vintage port.
We stopped at Sandeman and Calem to sample their tasty port and instantly became fans.  Too bad we can't bring some back to Saudi!  We rushed back to the train station and had a nice "sleep" before arriving in Lisbon later that night!

Sintra, Cabo da Roca, Cascais, Estoril, Carcavelos, Belem
Portugal is much more than just Lisbon and Porto.  Here are some highlights outside of the 2 largest cities:

Sintra - a beautiful little town with castles, the most famous being the colourful Pena Palace, as shown below.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site completed in 1854.

Cabo da Roca - the easternmost point of continental Europe.

Cascais - beautiful town with lots of shops, restaurants, bars, and great beaches.  There are nice ones downtown and Guincho beach, which has a shoreline of almost 1km.  Many surfers travel here to hit the waves.

Estoril - we didn't actually stop, but there's a nice looking Casino for the gamblers out there.

Carcavelos - another amazing beach area - lots of beach bars and restaurants here.  We hopped off the bus to enjoy lunch and a few beers here.  Beautiful!

Belem - the home of the famous Pasteis de Belem pastries and Belem Tower (Torre de Belem), another UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The monastery in Belem is amazing to see.
